CO₂ Cryostimulation Therapy at the Alpentherme Gastein Health Center Fast, drug-free relief for acute and chronic pain
Modern cryostimulation therapy provides immediate pain relief – completely without medication. This innovative method uses targeted cold shock to effectively treat pain, inflammation, and swelling – contact-free, precise, and without side effects.
Starting now, we are offering this new therapy at the Alpentherme Gastein Health Center.
How does cryostimulation therapy work?
During treatment, liquid carbon dioxide is sprayed onto the affected area under high pressure. This creates a dry-ice mist that cools the skin down to 2–4 °C within 30 seconds.
This abrupt cooling – known as a thermal shock – activates neuro-reflexive processes that:
- immediately block pain receptors
- accelerate the removal of inflammatory substances
- stimulate blood circulation
- encourage self-regulation of the nervous system
The result: noticeable pain relief within a very short time – without medication, injections, or side effects.
Indications for Thermal Shock Therapy
Cryostimulation therapy can be applied in many cases and is particularly effective for:
- acute sports injuries (strains, bruises, ligament tears)
- postoperative pain and swelling
- rheumatic inflammation
- Verspannungen (z. B. Schulter-Nacken-Bereich)
- vein inflammation
- knee and shoulder pain
- heel spur, tennis or golfer’s elbow
- osteoarthritis of the knee, ankle, or spine
- complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS / Sudeck’s disease, stage I & II)
Cryostimulation also provides fast, well-tolerated relief for limited mobility or muscular overuse.
At our center, the treatment is performed using a certified Cryofos device, widely used in sports medicine, orthopedics, and rehabilitation.

Frequently asked questions about cold therapy
How long does one cryostimulation session last?
Usually between 1–2 minutes per pain area.
What does the treatment feel like?
It feels like an intense, dry cold – without moisture or pain.
How many sessions are needed?
This depends on the individual condition – in many cases, noticeable improvement occurs after the very first session.
What does cryostimulation therapy cost?
Cryostimulation therapy is an additional service that must be paid for privately.
Please check with your health insurance provider to see whether cost reimbursements or subsidies apply in your case.
If you have supplementary insurance, we recommend inquiring whether the costs for cryostimulation therapy are covered.
The price per session is € 8.00 per pain point. Cryo-stimulation therapy is applied locally to individual pain points and is not a full-body treatment.
