CO2-neutral Spa Resort On the path to becoming a "zero emissions spa"

Into a "green" future
A feel-good paradise for body, mind and soul. That is what we want to be. But for body and mind to be completely at ease, you also need an intact environment. Together with our partner Siemens, in 2019 we began planning to become a climate-neutral spa resort. In May 2020, we started putting those plans into action. Since when we have already invested around 1.7 million euros in the project.
Reduced Co2 emissions, lower energy costs
Many modernization projects have already been implemented after an intensive planning phase. These encompass adaptations to the complete hydraulics infrastructure and ventilation system for the swimming pools, including enlargement of the heating coils. By adapting the hydraulics system, it is now possible to generate most of the heating energy that is required through low-temperature heat pumps. This enables us to utilize recaptured thermal energy and thereby reduce energy costs. By doing so, the Alpentherme saves roughly 82,000 euros annually, whilst simultaneously reducing our CO2-footprint by almost 370 tons every year.
Thermal water helps save energy
The natural warmth of our thermal water likewise helps us to save energy. Thermal water that is no longer needed is collected in a separate retention pool. Such as the run-off from our thermal radon baths and the therapy pools in the Health Center. As well as the water that spills out of the pools and the thermal fountains. This water is reused to generate heat for our spa resort. The heat pumps of our thermal swimming lake alone produce as much as 1 megawatt hour of energy that we can make direct use of. Yet another goal is to operate the Alpentherme as a “zero emissions spa”. Our entire heating needs will then be covered through renewable sources of energy.
That said, we still have a lot to do – which also requires clever technology. For example, a monitor shows us our energy consumption in real time, allowing us to switch off energy guzzlers and make corrections. We are constantly monitoring and optimizing so that our Alpentherme does indeed become the first “zero-emissions spa” in Austria. We have already taken the first step in that direction!

Alpentherme Gastein is TÜV-certified
An innovative health and recreation center in the Alpine region. That is what the Alpentherme wants to be.
