Montequarium – Dive into a Fascinating Underwater World! Experience a unique "Swim-in" aquarium at Alpentherme Gastein

A Colorful Underwater World

Welcome to the Montequarium, the first "Swim-in" aquarium in the Alps! Here, you can experience exotic marine life up close – a special highlight for adventurers of all ages. Our seawater aquarium is home to 12 different species of marine animals. With 300,000 liters of water, it offers plenty of space and hiding spots for around 800 marine inhabitants. The special feature of the aquarium: thanks to its tunnel-like construction, guests can swim directly into the aquarium and dive alongside the fish. All our marine inhabitants come from certified breeding programs and are cared for by a dedicated team!

Who lives in the Montequarium?

Our Montequarium may only be 4 meters deep, but just like in the open sea, our fish have their favorite areas! Some species swim near the surface, others prefer the middle, and some stay at the bottom.

Near the surface: Here, you'll find schooling fish such as the Great Pompano, Batfish, and Silver Moonys.

In the middle: This is where you can spot species like the French Grunt, the Foxface, the Golden Trevally, and the Cownose Ray.

At the bottom: Resting on the sandy ground are species like the Round Stingray, the Bluestriped Grunt, and the Common Bluestripe Snapper.

Make sure to dive down and see who lives where – the ocean is full of surprises!

Who Takes Care of the Montequarium? Meet our aquarium team!

Behind the scenes, a lot of work goes into maintaining the Montequarium! The technology required for our seawater aquarium is something guests usually don't see. We prepare the seawater ourselves in a dedicated 200 m² technical area, which also houses quarantine tanks and nursery stations for sick or young fish.

Our marine biologist Murathan Özdemir and our diving team monitor and care for the fish daily. If a fish needs medical attention, it is transferred to the quarantine station. Specialist fish veterinarian Dr. Tamara Frank visits regularly to ensure our marine inhabitants stay healthy.

Save the 7 Oceans: Marine Conservation Projects Working together for ocean protection!

The Montequarium is not only a window into the fascinating underwater world but also a voice for marine conservation. Together with world-renowned freediver and marine conservationist Christian Redl, we support the Save the 7 Oceans project, dedicated to protecting marine habitats worldwide.

Alpentherme Goes Bali – A Reef for the Future

We’re taking it a step further: Alpentherme Gastein is funding an artificial reef in Bali to create a new habitat for fish, corals, and other marine life. Natural coral reefs are the rainforests of the ocean, but many are endangered or already destroyed due to rising temperatures, pollution, and overfishing. To prevent marine life from losing their home, we are supporting the construction of a new reef. These specially designed structures provide a protected environment for fish and corals and encourage the natural regeneration of the ocean.
