How long has there been a spa in Gastein?
The documented beginnings of cures and baths in the Gastein valley (Wildbad Gastein) date back to the 14th century. Due to the limited space available in Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein became a spa in the 19th century after Emperor Franz I granted permission to build a pipeline from Bad Gastein to Bad Hofgastein in 1828. Ever since, Bad Hofgastein has received 1 million litres of thermal water per day from the daily total output (4.5 million litres) of the Elisabeth spring.
